Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.
Genesis 1:3-4 (NKJV)
The word “speak” is translated from the Hebrew word ‘āmar. It means to speak, say, or utter. God used His spoken word to create the universe.
The word “good” is translated from the Hebrew word ṭôḇ, which means good, pleasant and agreeable.
He divided the light from the darkness. This parallels the division of light and darkness believers should have in their lives as well.
The word “light” is translated from the Hebrew word ‘ôr, which can mean illumination or luminary. Another example of this word being used in the Scriptures can be found in the book of Job.
“The light (‘ôr) of the wicked indeed goes out,
Job 18:5
And the flame of his fire does not shine.”
