Genesis 1:1

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Genesis 1:1 (NKJV)

Welcome to our study of Genesis! I’m so glad you are here!

The word “beginning” is translated from the Hebrew word rē’šîṯ. It has been translated as beginning, first fruits, first, and chief in the Hebrew (Old Testament) Scriptures.

An example of this word being used in another Scripture verse can be found in Genesis 49:3

“Reuben, you are my firstborn,
My might and the beginning (rē’šîṯ) of my strength,
The excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.

The word “God” is translated from the Hebrew word ‘ĕlōhîm. While it has overwhelmingly been translated as “God” (2,346 times) throughout the Scriptures, it also has been translated as the following:

god (244x), judge (5x), GOD (1x), goddess (2x), great (2x), mighty (2x), angels (1x), exceeding (1x), God-ward (1x), godly (1x).
