Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment,
Psalm 1:5 (NKJV)
Nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
So far in our study of Psalm 1, we’ve discovered that those who meditate on the law of God are considered righteous. They are like a tree planted by water, and they prosper.
The ungodly are not so.
Verse 5 tells us therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.
The Hebrew word translated as ungodly here is rāšāʿ. It means wicked, hostile to God, and guilty of sin.
This is why they are not allowed in the congregation of the righteous.
The righteous are protected by God, and the wicked are not. The word rāšāʿ is also used in Genesis 18:25.
“Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked (rāšāʿ), so that the righteous should be as the wicked (rāšāʿ); far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”
